Yufuin no Mori is sold out. Here's what actually gets you to Yufuin
Yufuin no Mori runs two or three round trips a day depending on the date, and every seat is reserved. If it is sold out you have not lost much: the highway bus from Fukuoka runs fourteen round trips, takes about the same time, and costs less. The mistake is planning the day around the train.
First, the thing almost every English page gets wrong
You will read that Yufuin no Mori runs three round trips a day. You will also read that it runs two. Both are on JR Kyushu's own English page, in the same screen: the timetable lists three southbound departures from Hakata, and the text beside it says "Hakata - Yufuin: 2 round trips a day."
Neither is wrong. The number changes by date. Trains 3 and 4 do not run every day. On the days they do not, the 10:11 slot out of Hakata is taken by a Limited Express Yufu instead — which is a perfectly good train, but it is not the one with the picture windows you booked your trip around.
JR Kyushu publishes an operating-day calendar on the train's own English page. It colours the days two ways: all Yufuin no Mori services running, or only trains 1, 2, 5 and 6. Check your date there before you build a plan around train 3.
On 2 September 2026, for example, the live Hakata departure board showed Yufuin no Mori at 9:17 and 14:38 only. Two round trips, not three.

One month, to the minute, at 10:00 Japan time. If your dates fall in autumn foliage season or a Japanese holiday week, that is when the seats go.
Sold out? The bus runs fourteen times a day
This is the part that turns a disappointment into a non-event.

The Fukuoka–Yufuin Line is run jointly by Nishitetsu, Hita Bus and Kamenoi Bus, from Tenjin and Hakata Bus Terminal to Yufuin Station. Every seat is reserved, so you do have to book — but with fourteen departures instead of two, you are booking a seat rather than winning a lottery. Web bookings are accepted until ten minutes before departure.
Or stay on the rails
Limited Express Yufu runs the same route. On 2 September 2026 it left Hakata at 07:43, 10:11, 12:14 and 18:30, taking roughly 2 hours 20 minutes. It has both reserved and non-reserved seats — so unlike Yufuin no Mori, a sold-out reserved car does not stop you boarding.
The Kyushu Net Ticket fare to Yufuin is ¥5,100 on Yufu, against ¥5,600 on Yufuin no Mori.
Going via Beppu instead
Limited Express Sonic leaves Hakata around thirty times a day — roughly at :00 and :20 past each hour through the day — and reaches Beppu in about two hours. If the scenic train is full and the bus times do not suit you, this is the route with the most departures of anything on this page.
Can you do Beppu and Yufuin in one day?
Yes — but only if you stop thinking in trains.

Ordinary trains from Yufuin terminate at Oita, so by rail you are either on one of three limited expresses or changing at Oita. Route 36 runs from 6:56 in the morning to 18:00 in the evening from the Yufuin side, and from 7:37 to 18:20 from Beppu Station West Exit. There is also a sightseeing service, Yufurin, once each way.
The pattern worth taking away: in this corner of Kyushu, the train is the scenic option and the bus is the frequent one. Plan on the bus, and treat a Yufuin no Mori seat as a bonus if you get one.
What this page does not tell you
The full over-the-counter fare — the base fare plus the limited express supplement — for Hakata to Yufuin or Hakata to Beppu. The figures above (¥5,600 and ¥5,100) are the discounted Kyushu Net Ticket prices from JR Kyushu's own release, not the walk-up price. We could not confirm the walk-up total from a source we can cite, so it is not here. Nor are the weekend and holiday frequencies for Kamenoi Bus route 36, which we could only confirm for weekdays.
