The first train from Tenjin to Fukuoka Airport (and whether you'll make a 6:30am flight)
The first weekday subway from Tenjin to Fukuoka Airport is 5:44, and the ride takes about ten minutes. That is enough for a 6:30am domestic flight if you are not checking a bag. It is not enough for an international one, because the airport station connects to the Domestic Terminal and the free shuttle to the International Terminal does not start until 6:00.
Two people can ask exactly the same question — can I make a 6:30 flight on the first train? — and get opposite answers. It depends on which terminal you are flying from, and almost nothing written in English says so.
The times
| Weekday first train, Tenjin → Fukuoka Airport | 5:44 |
|---|---|
| Weekday first train, Fukuoka Airport → Hakata / Tenjin | 5:43 |
| Tenjin → Fukuoka Airport, journey time | about 10 minutes |
| Hakata → Fukuoka Airport, journey time | about 5 minutes |
The part that changes the answer: the station is at the Domestic Terminal
Fukuoka Airport Station is directly connected to the Domestic Terminal. It is not connected to the International Terminal, and there is no train that goes there.
To reach the International Terminal you take a free shuttle bus. The airport's own access diagram gives it as 10 minutes. You leave the subway through the ticket gate marked "International Terminal Shuttle Bus" and board at Bus Stop 1.
And the shuttle starts later than the trains do
| First shuttle, Domestic → International | 6:00 |
|---|---|
| First shuttle, International → Domestic | 6:17 |
| Daytime interval | roughly every 5–6 minutes |
So: does 6:30 work?
Domestic — tight, and only with hand luggage
05:44 first train leaves Tenjin
05:54 arrive Fukuoka Airport Station
(Domestic Terminal, directly connected)
06:30 departure
That leaves about 35 minutes to get through security and to the gate. It is enough with a carry-on. It is not enough if you have a bag to check — check-in and bag-drop cut-offs vary by airline, so confirm yours rather than trusting a general rule.
International — no
05:44 first train leaves Tenjin
05:54 arrive Fukuoka Airport Station — Domestic Terminal
06:00 earliest possible shuttle
06:10 arrive International Terminal
06:30 departure
Twenty minutes before an international departure, at a terminal you have only just walked into. You will not make it.
What people who live here actually do
Nobody local relies on the first train for an early international flight.
A taxi from Hakata or Tenjin to the International Terminal takes roughly 15–20 minutes. From Hakata that is around ¥2,500–3,000; from Tenjin it is higher. Between 22:00 and 05:00 a 20% night surcharge applies.
That option exists because the airport is close to the city, and this is the thing that catches out travellers used to Haneda or Narita. In Tokyo you would book an airport hotel for a 6:30 departure. In Fukuoka you do not have to.
If you do want to sleep near the airport, stay around Hakata Station rather than the airport itself. There are far more hotels, and the taxi from there takes about the same time.
The subway-plus-shuttle combination is for the domestic terminal, with light luggage, later in the morning.
Taxi fares, as of 2026
Fukuoka's taxi fares changed on 1 July 2026.
| Vehicle | First 1.1 km | Then |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | ¥600 | ¥100 per 287 m |
| Large | ¥720 | ¥100 per 176 m |
| Extra large (jumbo) | ¥780 | ¥100 per 148 m |
A 20% surcharge applies between 22:00 and 05:00. Fares above ¥9,000 are discounted by 10% on the amount over that.
One thing this page deliberately does not tell you
The exact subway fare between the airport and Hakata or Tenjin. Fukuoka City Subway publishes standard adult fares in distance bands — ¥210, ¥260, ¥300, ¥340, ¥360, ¥380 — but its fare table is published as an image, and we have not been able to confirm which band applies from a source we can cite. Rather than guess, we have left it out. The machine at the station will show you.
